So when I mentioned being more excited about blogging now that spring is arriving, I wasn’t lying…it’s just that spring decided to depart us for winter again, apparently. April is a trying month in Minneapolis. Grr. At least I’ve seen new grasses growing before they’re about to get covered up with some snow again tonight.
I have had this post lying around for almost two years about green smoothies. It’s pretty epic (I think I typed it in a word processor, and it was around 5-6 pages), but I have never gotten around to making it what I want it, and mostly I wonder if it will even get there. My will to spring and warmer weather is pretty intense right now, so I’m trying to coax it out with green smoothies, and decided this was a good springboard to both get a new recipe posted, and inquire as to the desire for a green smoothie-primer type of post (including a build-your-own-green-smoothie template of sorts!). Yes or no?
This smoothie recipe is a little different from my usual toss-in-whatever-is-in-the-freezer smoothie. When I first made it, I sought out the same ingredients many times after to recreate it. It’s thick and filling in texture from the avocado and pear, while at the same time fresh and tart in flavor from the lime and kiwifruit. The added date is optional if you really want a zinger! But it will of course depend upon how sweet your kiwi and pear are. And if you don’t have spirulina on hand, I think this would be really great with a handful of parsley or cilantro. Regardless: Yumtown!
Oh! And that ‘sneak peek’ I was referring to? Slowly but surely I’m building up an arsenal of recipes to get tested for zine no. 2…above you see a couple recipes that I was working on last summer for gluten-free herbed amazake biscuits with garlicky hempnut spread (aka – a soy-free savory topping). 1 ripe pear, stemmed, seeded and chopped
1/2-1 avocado (depending on size), peeled and pitted
1 kiwifruit, peeled and chopped
1 lime, peeled and chopped
1/2 teaspoon spirulina powder
1 pitted date (optional)
1/2-1 cup water
Starting with 1/2 cup water, place all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth, adding more water as needed to achieve desired consistency. Drink up!
