It’s been awhile, I realize. I officially turned a year older, went out of town, and had spent a lot of time cleaning up my apartment to prepare for a retro cocktail party featuring a flaming cabbage centerpiece! I have wanted to make this fantastic organic decorative piece for a long time, and finally went for it. I spent two days making farinata, nut cheese, salsa, ants on a log, endive cups, almond rice balls, sweet potato-black bean-rice balls, and sliced veggies, in between dusting and dishes. Here is the star of the show, a beautiful (though afterwards largely unusable) vegetable centerpice made of green cabbage, red kale, and a bed of ice, sure to make Brini Maxwell glad:
While I had planned to make several painstaking appetizers, there simply wasn’t enough time for a busy working woman. I did manage to make “ants on a log mini-bites” (is that vegan?) and some endive cups filled with pine nut cheese, homemade balsamic fig spread, and basil chiffonade! Not very retro, but very pretty, and very popular. In fact, the only thing left after this whole full table were a few stray store-bought chips and bits of salsa. A successful party with minimal cleanup thanks to my dear lovely friends Michael and Rachel who helped with the dishes at the end of the night.
I hope to be back soon with “real” entries and some recipes, but life lately has consisted of green smoothies and repeated entrees… it’s not blog fodder, but definitely makes for a happy tummy!
